Royal Casino of Murcia (Spain)
Entertainment and tourism surrounded by impressive architecture and sculptures—this is the Royal Casino of Murcia, a building to enjoy with family and friends.

The Royal Casino of Murcia is an emblematic building located in the centre of the city, right on Traperia street. It was designed by Pedro Cerdan, who gave it an eclectic style with modernist and historicist influences.

Everything you need to know

Its historic architecture, built in 1853, has a unique personality due to an artistic mix of the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. This important infrastructure was declared a national historical-artistic monument in 1983.

It is a favourite building among tourists and residents of the city, receiving approximately 150,000 visitors annually. It also has a private club where events are held.

The building underwent an intense reconstruction between 2006 and 2009. Upon completion of the work, King Juan Carlos I granted it the title of Royal. Since then, it has been known as Royal Casino de Murcia.

What can't you miss?

There is an English library built in 1913. It has an upper gallery of carved wood supported by cast corbels that represent flamingos, as well as countless ancient volumes of great value.

In addition, there is a very elegant ladies' dressing room decorated with feminine symbols painted on the ceiling of the goddess Selene. Likewise, the building has a tea room with an imposing plaster ceiling, which was rebuilt.

Taking a few steps in front of the library, you will find a room called "Congresillo", decorated with paintings by Obdulio Miralles and Manuel Picolo. This was an important place where meetings of Murcian personalities in charge of the city's economic and social development were held.

Through the transformation, the courtyard called "Pompeiano" was created. It is made up of 14 columns with Ionic capitals that offer a beautiful artistic effect in a Neoclassical style.

In the centre is a sculpture of Venus created by Jose Planes. It is located on a pedestal depicting Zeus.

Finally, you can enter the Neo-Baroque-style ballroom, a space with inlaid parquet floors, gold-plated bronze lamps and Bacarat crystal pieces made by Chalier and Jean. It has a double height with ceilings decorated with icons of painting, music, poetry and architecture along with portraits of illustrious Murcians such as the Count of Floridablanca, Francisco Salzillo, Nicolas de Villacis and Julian Romea.

Throughout the building is a large collection of 19th-century paintings by prominent artists such as Pedro Sanchez Picazo, German Hernandez Amores, Obdulio Miralles and Juan Antonio Gil Montejano.
