Badlands (Oriental region - Murcia)
The Oriental region is formed by the municipalities of Abanilla and Fortuna. With a land area of 385 square kilometres, it is a region where crops and vineyards constitute the most characteristic economic and production activities.

Because it borders so many other regions and has outstanding tourist sites, the Oriental region is the perfect place to discover new and interesting corners.

Production and economy

Comarca Oriental de Murcia
Agriculture in the Oriental region accounts for the main economic activity in the area, through the cultivation of various native fruits and the production of wines.

All this creates the right environment for a spectacular tourist attraction.

It is interesting to note that the promotion of tourism, especially ecotourism, aims to achieve the recognition of the region and the cultural and historical enhancement of the place.

Natural landscapes and tourist places

El Cantón: This is a district of Abanilla in which the cultivation of fruits such as almond and olive trees is evident. This population offers a set of old architectural structures worthy of admiration, offering a living testimony of the history and cultural heritage of the municipality of Abanilla.

The Sierra del Cantón is the ideal destination for those who want to enjoy nature and tranquillity, as it offers a set of perfect trails to enjoy sports or outdoor activities.

Sierra de la Pila Regional Park: This is located between the limits of Fortuna and other adjacent municipalities. It is a park with incredible views, made up of dreamy natural landscapes, in addition to having a relevant ecosystem where fauna is the protagonist.

It is the perfect place to be in direct contact with nature and to enjoy the best views of the region of Murcia.

Abanilla desert and the Chicamo river: This is a desert area with imposing rock formations between the greenery of the trails and adjacent forests and the predominant arid terrain.

The Chicamo river that reaches Abanilla is the most characteristic natural walking route in the area. It offers everything from natural arid formations to small groups of greenish grass that give the place a touch of contrast.

Festivals

Part of the charm of the Oriental region is its traditions and people, who gather every year to celebrate the following festivals:

Festival of the Blessed and Vera Cross, Moors and Christians: This honours the patron saint of the municipality of Abanilla, the Blessed Cross. It is a celebration that takes place between April and May and is one of the most traditional religious festivals in the region of Murcia.

Between parades, dances and faith, the historical and religious past of the town is extolled.

Festivals in Fortuna: Among the most outstanding festivals in Fortuna is the Iberian-Roman Sodales Festival, declared of Regional Tourist Interest, which is made up of two periods throughout the year: in April with the Aprilli kalendas and in August with the Sodales festivities. In addition, Carnival and Holy Week stand out.

Another iconic festival is that of Saint Isidore the Farmer, which, between parades of floats, typical dishes and different cultural activities, highlights the traditions and beliefs of the area.

The Oriental region, together with the two municipalities that comprise it, is a tourist destination full of striking natural landscapes and historical traditions, offering tranquillity and recreation to anyone who wants to connect with nature.
