Castillitos Battery (Cartagena - Murcia)
In the western area of Cartagena, in Cabo Tiñoso, is the Battery of Castillitos, a very picturesque place that represents a kind of fortress dominated by cliffs, forming a 257-meter fort that simulates a walled city.

At 250 meters above sea level, it is impressive to look at. It has 18 impressive cannons, with its own dependency, engine room, a spare parts store and a camera room, all of which blend in with the terrain.

Always ready for battle

The Military Battery of Castillitos took three years to build, from 1933 to 1936, as part of Primo de Rivera's defence plan. Subsequently, Colonel of Engineers Mariano Campos made some changes according to the instructions of Captain Nicanor Martínez Ruiz.

This was done to place two cannons, which were manufactured in England to protect the Cartagena Naval Base. These reached 35 kilometres and the steel bullet they launched weighed 885 kilograms.

Without a doubt, this place is ideal for lovers of battles and history, due to all the events that took place in Cabo Tiñoso.

Cartagena Naval Base

The main mission was to defend the homeland from the entrance through the bay of Cartagena. Powerful British cannons were provided to defend the area. The idea was that, together with its twin battery, located in Cabo Negrete, a crossfire would be established that would stop any attempt to enter.

The truth is that the battery was fired only once, on April 24, 1937, and was not completely finished. However, due to its impressive power, it did not have to be fired again because it was enough to keep the enemy ships away.

In 1945, its denomination changed to C-1. In 1949, improvements were made such as a modern direction of fire. To make distance measurements easier, graph-metric posts with underwater facilities were built.

Cultural Asset of Humanity

On June 1, 1977, the Castillitos Battery carried out its last practice with live fire, under the charge of Lieutenant D. Salvador González Pola de la Granja. In 1994, it was definitively out of service due to the rationing of military resources in the country.

It is currently a Cultural Asset of Humanity, as well as a Spanish Historical Heritage. In 2013, it was among the finalists of the Repsol guide to be considered the best corner of the country. All these awards do not do justice to the place, which impresses with its imposing architectural beauty.

The Battery of Castillitos is worth knowing due to its vast history and its majesty, which impress all travellers who pass through the place.
