Abandoned mines of Mazarron (Murcia)
The Mazarron mines offer a peculiar landscape full of magical colours and a lot of history. If you love architecture and adventure, this is your ideal place.

The great mining complex that provides this scenario from another world is large, so travelling it could take several hours. However, it will be worth discovering every corner to take photos that show a background in reddish tones.

Know the Mazarron mines

Its appearance is very similar to that of the planet Mars. This is the best description of the complete panorama of these old mines, from which silver, lead, iron and zinc were extracted until the sixties.

Along the route in the Mazarron mines, you will find that everything is visibly exposed. Thus, the passing of the years makes you feel as though you are in a desolate but inspiring environment.

The constructions, all the abandoned machinery and the wooden castles used for the extraction of materials, next to vegetation and carrion birds such as crows, create the ideal scenario for photographers.

Precautions on the visit

While this is an attractive place worth visiting, you must take special care of every detail. It is a totally abandoned place, meaning it does not have rigorous security measures. This means you must keep your eyes open for wells and small cliffs.

The constant exposure of this ancient outdoor construction leaves these ruins in a latent danger of collapse, so you should not enter any of the spaces.

If it has rained before your visit, you will likely find large amounts of mud. In this case, you must wear comfortable boots so that you can walk through this unique site.

Mining history

Mazarron was composed of several villages that dedicated themselves to mining and established this practice as the fundamental pillar of their economy.

The records indicate that the first farms were created in the Bronze Age and that the Romans between the second century BC and the second century AD obtained the greatest benefit from this mining potential.

In the Middle Ages, the activity continued, but a considerable benefit was not obtained from it. Meanwhile, in the Modern Age, the result of the exploitation of minerals made prominence, being alumin and the Almagra those responsible for success.

At the start of the contemporary age, metal mining was present. Iron, lead, silver, zinc and copper were the latest beneficial resources obtained from the mines until the cessation of these activities in 1969. One of the causes of the mine’s closure was the exhaustion of minerals.

It is a place of great geological and mining interest.
