Mazarron is a city whose economy is based mainly on tourism, agriculture and fishing. Thus, there are many surprises to enjoy during your visit.
It is located in the Bajo Guadalentin region. Its urban centre is 55 meters above sea level and 72 kilometres from the city of Murcia.
Without further ado, we present our 10 reasons to visit Mazarron:
1. Town Hall: This is the old town hall building, modernist in style, from the end of the 19th century. It has a modernist gazebo with a zinc roof that makes it unique in the region.
A reconstruction was carried out in 1987 in part of the roofs, partitions and slab, but in 2001 cracks were found on the second floor of the building, for which it was provisionally evicted. It opened its doors again in 2008 as a cultural and exhibition space.
2. Whimsical shapes: As if you were watching a science fiction movie, the Bolnuevo Erosions appear. They are rock formations carved and shaped over thousands of years by water and wind, creating a fantasy landscape that is worth visiting.
3. Marine life: The Bay of Mazarron is one of the best locations to spot dolphins, sperm whales and pilot whales. Its crystal clear waters and biodiversity makes it very attractive for diving professionals.
4. Puerto de Mazarron Beach: This has everything you need to have fun and enjoy the beach: blue sea, fine golden sand and a water park. It also has lifeguards, footbaths, restaurants and nearby stops for the tourist train, bus line and taxis.
5. Roman factory: A visit to the Interpretation Centre of the Roman Salting Factory is essential. There, you will find archaeological remains of a late-Roman salting fish complex. You can also learn the famous recipe from Roman times based on fish entrails, called "Garum".
6. Treasures of the sea: On the fishing quay is the “Lonja”, one of the most interesting places in Mazarron. From Monday to Friday, the traditional fish bid is celebrated, a curious show with a pure Mediterranean flavour.
7. Ruins of the castle: In the heart of the town, on a small hill and surrounded by the most important buildings in the city, are the imposing ruins of the Castle of los Velez, a military fortress built in the 15th century by the Marquesses of los Velez.
Due to its strategic location, it is a perfect place to obtain an impressive view of the old quarter of the current town.
8. Festivities for all: The municipality has 14 districts, each with a patron saint festival of great peculiar and gastronomic interest.
Among them, the Pilgrimage of Bolnuevo stands out. It is celebrated in November.
9. Orchard and sea: Mazarron's gastronomy is a perfect mix of the orchard and the sea. Among the culinary combinations, the monkfish or mere “a la Mazarronera”, the “ajotomate”, the hake meatballs and the sardine “moragas” stand out. They are the great specialties that cannot be missed.
