Totana (Murcia)
Right in the Guadalentin valley, just 40 kilometres from the city of Murcia, is Totana, which offers unforgettable memories for all tastes and ages.

Nature, monuments, churches, music and culture are some of the secrets that these lands reveal to their visitors, who are gladly attended to by all the inhabitants.

We present our 10 reasons to visit Totana.

1. Sanctuary of Saint Eulalia of Merida: Between pine forests is this authentic jewel, known locally as “La Santa”, exactly 7 kilometres from the city, between dense orchards, pine forests and fruit trees.

Spanning 200 square meters, the Sanctuary of Saint Eulalia of Merida is covered by 46 frescoes that represent different moments of the martyrdom of Saint Eulalia, in addition to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the life of Saint Francis, among other scenes of other saints.

La Santa is a true wonder, from the Mudejar coffered ceilings to the paintings made in the 17th century, which delicately cover all the walls of this temple.

2. Archaeological site: Here is La Bastida de Totana, one of the most important archaeological sites in Continental Europe belonging to the Argaric culture, in the Bronze Age, 4,200 years ago.

In these lands on the outskirts of Totana is this fortified square, whose characteristics have earned it the qualification of "The Troy of the West".

3. Sierra Espuña: The physiognomy of this magnificent mountain range was reached 20 million years ago and extends through five municipalities in the Region of Murcia.

It has incredible corners to visit while hiking or mountaineering, such as the Leyva Walls and the Snow Wells, not to mention the mysteries that the old Tuberculosis Sanatorium holds.

4. Chapel of the Miraculous: This is a neo-Gothic-style building constructed at the end of the 19th century on the site of the Conception Hermitage, one of the first churches built in Totana (1378).

The Hospital of the Conception was also located on its grounds. There, the brotherhood of the same name helped those most in need.

5. Gastronomy: Its typical dishes are those of the Region of Murcia, which is closely linked to seasonal cycles. Dishes such as fresh pot, potatoes cooked with garlic, liver and other fried offal stand out, as do their respective typical desserts such as rice pudding, fried cakes and Easter sweets.

6. Festivals: Its religious festivals combine tradition and modernity. The Festival of Saint James the Apostle stands out and is celebrated on July 25. Other typical festivals are those held in honour of Saint Eulalia, whose big day is December 3. This is the beginning of the Day Fair, which lasts for 10 days.

7. Parish Church of the Three Hail Marys: This is a beautiful building that was inaugurated in the 17th century and functioned as a convent for Franciscan friars.

The current construction is Renaissance in style and inside it conserves a crypt from the 17th century.

8. Church of Saint James the Greater: Its construction was carried out between 1535 and 1567. Its architecture is Tuscan-style, with a Plateresque-style portal and a basilica-style interior.

The main altar has a Baroque-style altarpiece with Solomonic-style columns adorned with typical vine leaves.

9. Saint Roch Hermitage: It is located on a hill in the northern part of the town. Its construction dates back to the 18th century; it is a Tuscan building with a rectangular floor plan and a nave.

On its main altar is a wooden image of Saint Roch.

10. Crafts: Totana's crafts are a great source of development for the town, standing out with a wide variety of pottery and ceramic pieces.

Totana is home to a large number of artisan ceramic workshops, most of them family-owned, which keep this activity of medieval origin alive and which have taken the name of Totana to all corners of the world.
