This was created as a defensive tower for the port of Mazarron, and over the years became its distinctive lighthouse.
The original tower was built in the “Cabezo del Puerto” to protect the coasts from invasions and foreign attacks. Located in a privileged place, with an unattainable height, the tower had one of the best views in the region to fulfil its objective. In 1861, the tower was demolished and the construction of the lighthouse began using and taking advantage of the materials from the recent tower that lived there.
One of the most significant examples of this use of resources is its old cannons, which were melted down and used to make the bells of a hermitage. The lighthouse is about 11 meters high and its range is 15 nautical miles.
