Aerial view of Monteagudo (Murcia)
Many know the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, but it is not the only monument of its kind in the world. There are other, similar sculptures with a long history and exceptional views and landscapes, such as the Christ of Monteagudo or the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Murcia.

Just 5 kilometres from the city of Murcia is the Christ of Monteagudo, on top of a hill and at the foot of a castle that houses a great history, since King Alfonso X of Castile, known as the Wise, lived there.

This work draws the attention of anyone who sees it because, in addition to being at the top, it is 14 meters high, so it can be seen from miles away. If you like history, this is a good destination.

Curiosities of the Christ of Monteagudo

This statue was inaugurated in 1926. The most notable residents of the area financed the work, which cost around 30,000 pesetas at the time (currently, around 180 euros). This monument was demolished in 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, and was not raised again until 1951. It is the statue that is admired today.

The castle located here is much older than the sculpture, dating from the 11th century.

It is at least 5,000 square meters in size and its first resident was the king of the Taifa of Murcia.

The Christ of Monteagudo and the castle are attractive places full of history, ideal for those who like to nurture their knowledge and learn more about Spanish history.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus can be seen from many meters around. It has become one of the most important landscape landmarks of the Huerta de Murcia region and, without a doubt, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the area.

Access to the castle

To access the castle, you must be in excellent physical shape, as you have to climb stairs with many pine steps before reaching the top. However, the effort is rewarded with a view of the majestic city of Murcia – without a doubt, a gift very valuable for travellers.

On the way up, you can better appreciate the castle because you will observe, in detail, the domes of the towers, the cisterns, and everything that makes up such a wonderful creation. Inside the castle, in the building itself, you can see large-scale paintings that mark various eras and capture the landscape just as it was on the date of its creation.

The experience in Monteagudo

Monteagudo, territorially, is recognized as a jewel of archaeology because it houses over 5,000 years of history. It has a past of Argaric, Iberian, Roman, and Arab civilizations. Travelers can start their tour at the visitor centre, which is located in the square in the centre of the district.

It is a place that housed kings, fought important battles, and contributed to the consolidation of Islamic culture in the kingdom of Murcia. Monteagudo houses a lot of history, which will give travellers fascinating stories to share. It is a destination of interest that is impossible to not enjoy.
