Vega Alta del Segura region

The Vega Alta del Segura region is bordered to the south by the Ricote Valley and to the north by the Altiplano region. It includes the municipalities of Abaran, Blanca and Cieza. It has an area of 568 square kilometres and its main economic activity is irrigated agriculture.

Places of interest

The tourism sector is essential in the region and there is a wide variety of infrastructure for public use such as hostels, recreational areas, houses and interpretation centres, among other attractions.

Cieza Boulevard

This is ideal for enjoying art, thanks to the murals created by Jose Lucas Ruiz, which give a touch of colour to one of the busiest areas of this city.

This open-air museum pays tribute to various artists such as Michelangelo, Charles Chaplin, Tiepolo and Tiziano, among others.

Monument to agriculture

Cervantes Theatre

This is located in Abaran and was built where the old Cervantes Cinema used to be. It was constructed in 1926 and inside contains details reminiscent of the Romea Theatre in the city of Murcia. It was closed for many years but reopened its doors to the public in 2000.

Convent of Saint Joachim and Saint Paschal

This was built between the 17th and 18th centuries and is located in Cieza, in Esquina del Convento Square. It has functioned as a refuge for the underprivileged and the elderly, a civil guard barracks, a public school, a hospital and, currently, the Padre Salmerón library.

Rafting down the Segura river

There is a great diversity of tourist activities in the Vega Alta del Segura region. One of the most outstanding is rafting. One can descend the Segura river from Cieza to El Jarral Park (Abaran) on a route with quiet areas, rapid areas, water slides and waterfalls.

Economic activity

The Segura river is a key point in this region, as it has mountainous alignments and expansions that form the irrigated plains. Here, this is a union of agriculture, industry, livestock and services, which are linked to the smallholder field. They are all important due to their significance and value for the Vega Alta del Segura region.
