The Oriental region of Murcia, with a population slightly greater than 16,000 inhabitants, includes the municipalities of Fortuna and Abanilla. From the Roman occupation to the present day, it has been a territory subject to the use of its natural resources. Thus, it contains interesting heritage ruins. This rich heritage joins the significant beauty of the Oriental region, especially its many routes and trails, both urban and natural.
The Abanilla Urban Route gives tourists and visitors the opportunity to see and admire the spectacular medieval layout that is still preserved intact. Here, many monuments are located, such as the "Casa Pintada" from the 16th century, the "Casa de la Encomienda", the Purísima Square and many churches. Other routes that can be enjoyed in Abanilla are the Mahoya—El Cajer Route of almost 9 linear kilometres, the La Huerta—Los Barrancos Route and the Abanilla Olive Grove Route. All of them are full of impressive natural wealth and spectacular views.
For its part, Fortuna has an interesting Industrial Archaeological Route rich in heritage treasures. It shows how resources such as gypsum and salt were used in ancient times via a long route that runs throughout the municipality. Other interesting heritage routes are the Route of the Hermitages, the Religious Route and the Monumental Route.
Likewise, Fortuna is rich in routes of ecotourism value. These include the Geological Route, the Route in Nature and the Route to the Ramblas, where hikers and tourists can enjoy the natural beauty of this municipality. Examples include the Sierra de la Pila Regional Park, the "Rambla Salada", the Thermal Baths, the "Sierra de Lugar" and the "Rambla de Ajauque".
