Pears poached in red wine
The region of Murcia is full of flavours for those who want to discover its rich and varied gastronomy. The delicatessen products of this region are innumerable; with them, unbeatable dishes are made that are part of Murcian gastronomy.

Completely natural products, grown in the region’s well-known orchards, form part of delicious recipes such as “zarangollo” or the typical Murcian salad. Join us to learn more about some of its exquisite delicatessen products.

Cheeses

Cheeses are perhaps one of the most exquisite and attractive delicatessen products in the region. The basic cheese is made from goat's milk, though this can have variations.

We can find it bathed in wine, originating from the same place, characterized by a red colour on the cheese layer. It can also be almond cured; in this case, at the time of its curing, it is covered with a layer of olive oil and almond flour, giving it an unmistakable flavour.

Made in the Altiplano region, each type has its own charm and has a designation of origin (seal of quality) that attests to the origin and excellence of Murcia cheese.

Wines

Wine cannot be missed in Murcia, as some of the best wines in Spain are produced in this region. For example, the wines of Earth have a particular sweet flavour that will make you fall in love. There is also Yecla wine, which stands out for its seven varieties.

In addition to Jumilla wines, we have a wide range of options for all tastes and flavours: natural sweet, red, rosé, claret and white. We finished with the Bullas wine, which has the denomination of origin support with the tricolour: white, rosé and red wine.

Serrano ham

Murcian Serrano ham is so exquisite in flavour and cut that in 2020, Reserva Escámez Serrano ham, made by the Murcian company Hermanos Escámez Sánchez, S.L. (Bullas), received the Spanish Food Award for the best ham of 2020, awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

This seal of recognition is well deserved, as the Serrano ham from Murcia is usually prepared with up to 20 months of curing and great care to obtain the perfect finish, not only in taste, but also in terms of olfactory-gustatory results.

Jumilla pears in red wine

The Jumilla pear is a fruit grown in the Altiplano region, near the provinces of Albacete and Alicante. It belongs to the Ercolini variety and has a Protected Designation of Origin. The pear stands out for its green and reddish colour, as the latter is the colour produced on the face where it receives sunlight.

In addition, the climatic conditions of the area facilitate its production in a sustainable way, so its flavour, texture and physical appearance are exclusive to this area of Spain.

With this rich fruit, one can prepare everything from delicious pastry recipes to the famous Jumilla pears in red wine.

The latter is a true delicacy. They are prepared by adding peeled pears to a saucepan with sugar and wine until they are completely covered. A little lemon peel and a cinnamon stick are also added. They are sewn over medium heat for an hour, and that's it. You can eat them instantly with a bit of syrup and a dollop of cream, or the next day when they are cold! It is a 100% native dessert that you cannot miss.

The Imperial of Lorca

We finish this list of delicacies from the region of Murcia with the Imperial of Lorca, a raw-cured sausage made with pork pieces and fat that has a very particular flavour. Seasonings, additives and authorized spices are included in its preparation.

As a result, we obtain a sausage in a natural casing after a maturation and drying process that guarantees its characteristic flavour and texture. Good kneading is also key during its preparation process.

The Imperial of Lorca had its origin in the city of Lorca in 1927 thanks to the Jódar butcher brothers, also known as the “Quijales Brothers”. Undoubtedly, it is a sausage that preserves the traditional and artisanal spirit of its creators, whose product is capable of satisfying the most demanding palates, especially those with a special preference for meat products.

The region of Murcia is a benchmark in terms of gourmet products!
