Moratalla (Murcia)
The word “privileged” takes on its full meaning when we talk about Moratalla. There are many more than five reasons to visit this beautiful Murcian town.

It is a town rich in nature that you cannot miss as a destination when visiting the region of Murcia.

We present our five reasons to visit Moratalla:

Moratalla Castle and Tamborada

Moratalla Castle is an imposing building from the ninth century that is considered an authentic jewel of medieval architecture.

It has five towers, the main one being the Homage Tower, which is reached by a spiral staircase.

Regarding its popular festivals, Moratalla stands out for its famous “Tamborada”, which was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2018.

Paraje de la Puerta

Are you looking for a spectacular place to camp, have a picnic or just walk surrounded by nature? Bordered by the Alharabe river, the Paraje de la Puerta is a place that you should include on your travel agenda.

You will be surrounded by mountains, listening to the relaxing sound of water. This is a perfect place to disconnect and reconnect. Hiking is one of the most practiced sports in the place, but if the water calls you, take a dip! Children and adults will love swimming in the crystal clear waters of the pools found there, such as the Somogil thermal pools, whose warm water comes from the Hondares stream.

Do not forget to comply with the required protection and hygiene measures, as this is a protected area. Take care of it so you can come back as many times as you want!

Hiking in Bolvonegro

This is a short route, ideal for children and adults, beginning its journey in the Paraje de Bolvonegro.

It is recommended that you start the route on the Moratalla-Calasparra road, towards Socovos, where you will find the appropriate signs.

In just an hour and a half, you will have covered its maximum round trip length, but remember, if children accompany you, good shoes and adequate supervision will make the experience a unique day.

Cave Art Interpretation Centre and House of Christ

House of Christ Hermitage (Moratalla - Murcia)
Following the road that goes to Campo de San Juan, you will find the famous House of Christ Sanctuary, whose space is shared with the Cave Art Interpretation Centre, an essential destination if you want to know more about prehistoric cave art in the Region of Murcia.

It also has a restaurant in case you get hungry, but one of the main attractions is its natural balcony – a viewpoint from which you can enjoy wonderful views of the entire Sierra de Moratalla. The panoramic mode of your mobile will help you obtain the best photographs.

Gastronomy, land of wines and desserts

Due to the rich harvests in the region, Moratalla has a reputation for being an excellent producer of dry wine with a strong flavour, for true lovers of good wine. In addition, some excellent olive oils are produced in the region.

The “andrajos” and the “migas” of wheat flour with chunks or “morondanga” are the typical dishes of the area. However, the best time to taste the typical food of Moratalla is during its festivals. At Christmas, you can taste the “mantecados”, “suspiros”, egg rolls and Cabell d'àngel cakes, among other desserts made with flour, eggs, sugar, honey and almonds.

The famous marzipan, stuffed with egg yolks, also stands out.
