Located on the banks of the Segura river, Abaran is known for having four of the seven water wheels that still work in the province of Murcia. These attract thousands of tourists who marvel at the irrigation system that our ancestors used.
In addition to the water wheels, other places of tourist interest are the Hermitage of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian, the Church of Saint Paul, the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Gold, patroness saint and lady of Abaran, the Cervantes Theatre, the Old Bridge, and the Dam of the Jarral.
The good weather and terrain are ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, climbing, and rafting.
Abaran is famous for its rich gastronomy, with ratatouille being the official food for the holidays, and with rabbit and rice, as well as various pot dishes. As for desserts, we find the acclaimed "picardías", made of caramel and hazelnuts, and the famous "condenados", whose recipe has been kept secret for years.
