New Bridge (Murcia)

Also called Iron Bridge, this bridge crosses the Segura river. The city was forced to build it due to the great socio-economic growth it was experiencing.

Before its construction, residents and merchants depended on rafts to cross the river, which many times were disabled due to floods. The design of the bridge is basically made up of iron beams and slats, and its construction was completed in 1903.

This engineering work weighs a total of 550 tons that are distributed along its 54 meters in length. In 2001 it had to be closed due to structural problems and a restoration process was carried out, trying to preserve its original structure as best as possible. It reopened to the public in 2003.
