The Church of Saint Matthew sits on an old hermitage from the 17th century, an old Jesuit building located in what is now Abastos Square, which had been left unfinished when that order was expelled from Spain in 1773.
Due to a lack of funds, the work was carried out in various stages and lasted from 1800 to 1897.
The construction is in the Baroque style and stands out for its slender dome, made by the architect Justo Millán. It is composed of a polygonal body of lights which decoratively collects Renaissance aspects.
The interior decoration is very elegant, standing out mainly for its sobriety. Inside, the main altarpiece stands out over the rest of the elements.
