The port of Cartagena historically contributed to the development and growth of the city. It has two independent docks: Cartagena and Escombreras. They are separated from each other by a distance of 5 km by land and 1.5 miles by sea.
Since Roman times it has been one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. Today it is the fourth most important port in Spain for freight traffic. Regarding tourism, the port of Cartagena is eighth nationwide in volume of passengers from cruise ships.
In addition to its relationship with trade and tourism, it has been linked to the Navy, being the base of the Military Arsenal and headquarters of the Submarine Base of the Spanish Navy and other naval units.
