The Regional Assembly is the parliament of the region. In this building, the tasks of appointing the regional president among its members, legislating on issues that are the exclusive competence of the Murcia region, and approving the general budgets of the autonomous community are carried out.
Originally, the Assembly occupied part of the building of the House of Culture of the City of Cartagena. In 1987, a major remodelling of the building began so that it could be used exclusively for parliamentary activities.
The renovation project was designed by the architect Rafael Braquehais, and the result was an eclectic-style building with elements alluding to the history and characteristics of the region.
In addition, it is worth highlighting the monumental and symbolic colourful work of the painter José Lucas. The Murcia Regional Assembly houses an impressive collection of pictorial works by visual artists from the Murcia region, such as Ramón Alonso Luzzy, Muñoz Barberán, Párraga, Molina Sánchez, and Inocencio Medina, among others.
