Its origin dates back to Roman times, when it already stood out for being one of the most important ports in the entire Mediterranean Sea. Later, it served all the other civilizations that passed through these lands.
This comes in fourth place in terms of freight traffic nationwide, behind Algeciras, Valencia, and Barcelona. Through this port, 60 percent of the exports of the Region of Murcia and 80 percent of the imports are carried out. In addition, 40 percent of the tourism that arrives in Cartagena does so through this port.
It was always linked to the Navy, with a Military Arsenal that is still active today. The port of Cartagena is also the headquarters of the Submarine Base of the Spanish Navy and other naval entities.
